What is Asterisks?

Asterisk is a software implementation of a telephone private branch exchange (PBX). It is an open source telephony server that runs on the Linux operating system. Asterisks enables calls to be made to one another, from domestic calls to long distance international calls, and to connect to telephony services such as the public switched telephone networks(PSTN) and voice over Internet Protocol (voIP) services when the telephones are interfaced with a variety of hardware technologies.

The Asterisks software supports a variety of traditional and voIP telephony systems, and includes many features available in both commercial and proprietary PBX systems. Therefore, it allows us to build telephone systems, or migrate existing to telephone system to incorporate new technologies.
